Lionel Fielding Downes

(1900-1972)

Lionel Fielding Downes was born in Wigan, Lancashire, England in 1900. While in England, he studied with Amy Phelps and Wilfred Ball. In 1912, Downs emigrated to Winnipeg Canada. He went on to study at the School of Fine Arts in Winnipeg, the Federal School of Design in Minneapolis, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Downes gained much recognition in Canada and abroad during the 1960s and early 70s. His paintings were exhibited at the Museum of Fine Art of Montreal, the Montreal Art Gallery, the Palette and Chisel Club of Chicago, the Art Student’s League of New York, the Royal Canadian Academy, and the Israel Nation Gallery of Tel-Aviv. Downes died in 1972.
