George McNeil  

(1908-1998)

George McNeil was born in New York City in 1909. He was painter, muralist, and printmaker well-known for his figurative expression. He was taught by Hans Hoffman, and studied at Art Students League of New York, Columbia University, Hans Hoffman School of Art, and Pratt Institute. He was a member of American Abstract Artists, and Federal Arts Projects. His works have been exhibited at Art Institute of Chicago, Brooklyn Museum, Corcoran Gallery Biennial, Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Modern Art New York, Pennsylvania Academy, and Whitney Museum of American Art. He was awarded the Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship. He died in Brooklyn in 1995.
