Thomas Hart Benton

(1889-1975)

Thomas Hart Benton was born in Neosho, Missouri in 1889. He was a regionalist, painter, sculptor, and illustrator who was well-known for his murals and paintings depicting American life and history. He studied and taught at the New School for Social Research, the Kansas City Art Institute, the Art Students League of New York, Art Institute of Chicago, Academy Colarossi, and Académie Julian. He was also an art educator, with Jackson Pollock being one of his students. He was involved in the National Academy of Design, St. Genevieve Art Colony, and participated in WPA/ Federal Arts Projects. His works have been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, Corcoran Gallery Biennial, the New York Museum of Modern Art, the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He died in Kansas City, Missouri in 1975.
