Joseph Pennell
(1857-1926)
Joseph Pennell was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1857. He was a painter, especially of cityscapes, well-known for his etchings, illustrations, and landscapes. He studied and taught at the Art Students League in New York, and the Pennsylvania Academyin Philadelphia. He was a member of the National Academy of Design, the Philadelphia Sketch Club, and the Society of Illustrators. His works were exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Boston Art Club, the Chicago 1893 Columbian Exhibition, the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the National Academy of Design, the Panama Pacific Exhibition of 1915, the Paris Salon, the Pennsylvania Academy, the Philadelphia Sketch Club, the Society of Illustrators, and The St. Louis Exposition- World’s Fair in 1904. He died in Brooklyn Heights, New York in 1926.
